Islam is the Arabic word for subjugation, for blind submission. Muslims say that Islam encourages everyone to study and learn. Muslims say that everything you need to know is in the Quran, so it is important to study this book. This study is only memorizing facts. The Quran is studied along with the traditions of Muhammad, the Hadith, and the biographies of Muhammad. These books complement each other. The study is thus limited to the amassing of factual knowledge. Understanding anything is irrelevant.
A good example is shown in the tradition collected by Muslim Book 7, Number 2915:
Abis Abis b. Rabi'a reported: I saw 'Umar (Allah be pleased with him) kissing the Stone and saying: I am kissing you and I know that you are a stone. And if I had not seen Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) kissing you, I would not have kissed you.
This is the stone in Mecca that Muslims on their pilgrimage kiss. Umar was one of the most "militant" friends of Muhammad. Obedience and following the example of Muhammad was his highest commandment. In the above mentioned Hadith he says clearly that he found kissing a stone pointless but he does so simply because he saw Muhammad do this. Case closed.
