We make constant references in our articles to an interesting series of texts about Islam that can be found on the following link “Koran notities door Linda Bogaert“ of the (in the meantime defunct) CENTRE FOR ISLAM IN EUROPE that was connected to the University of Ghent.
As already mentioned, Linda Bogaert has managed to produce a truly notable series of articles. She thinks and writes like a real Muslima. She does not skirt difficult subjects in her attempt to somehow present Islam as a most peaceloving religion. She departs from the general, accepted human rights principles and proves steadfastly that Islam is fully harmonious with them. That this sort of interpretation – version – of Islam is gainsaid by all Islamic scholars and has never existed at all in any Islamic nation, not even at the time of Mohammed, apparently does not deter Linda Bogaert .
This non-existent version of Islam is based on a very selective reading of the Koran and the Hadith, in the process of which Linda “thinks away” large portions of text. In addition, she is adept at reading into certain passages of the Islamic source texts matters that are not in them but which she would like to be there. In addition, she is possessed of a “healthy” dose of cognitive dissonance which she effectively uses to straighten the less attractive aspects of Islam, which she can do only by getting tangled up in contradictions, as you will notice infra. In all of this, Linda uses rationale that is practically “standard fare” amongst all of the western Islam apologists.

Jihad is not synonymous with war, that much should be obvious. It is a translation of the faith, in feeling and rationale, in word and deed.
It represents the ultimate manner in which to worship God, by actively experiencing one’s faith. It means nothing else than striving at any moment in one’s existence to serve God. In most instances, the use of force is explicitly prohibited in the process, and only peaceable methods such as the word may be employed. Even in the isolated instance of jihad al-asghar, where the use of force is, indeed, allowed, Muslims mean by 'holy' war, a war that is bound to, and imbued with, high moral principles – and this is a completely different meaning from the one commonly used in the West for war to disseminate the faith, an action in which, in any event, Muslims are forbidden to participate since the Koran guarantees everyone individual freedom of religion and prohibits compulsion in matters of faith.

Both in the Koran and in the Hadith, the word “jihad” in 99% of the cases is presented as a physical battle to defend Islam or spread the faith. In the islamic world, when someone mentions Jihad, he surely means ‘war”!
In the West, Muslims can obviously not say this out loud and hence have invented and worked out the concept of the spiritual Jihad. Grounds for this can be found in Islamic base sources, but these grounds are very weak indeed.
That the Koran guarantees freedom of religion is of course pure fantasy. In that case, Muslims would reject the example of their Prophet Mohammed who himself had by the end of his life all non-Muslims deported out of his region, if they had not already been killed or converted to the Islam faith.

Muslims that are apostates from Islam must be killed. Some Muslims even go as far as to claim that this also represents a form of freedom since you are free to choose to remain a Muslim or to become an apostate and die.
