4. THE TAFSIR: “Official” Quran commentaries
A Tafsir is a commentary on the Quran, composed by Islamic scholars. Since the Quran is vague and confusing in many aspects, it was necessary to explain it verse by verse. Verses of the Quran are linked to each other, often with the relevant Hadith to explain the verses.
The most respected Tafsir are the ones by Ibn Kathir; the summarized version is presented below. This “shortened” version contains over 6000 pages, ten times more than the Quran itself. Ibn Kathir was a brilliant Islamic scholar who lived from 1301 until 1373 AD.
