STUDY OF ISLAM
Being a woman in Islam according to Linda Bogaert: Introduction

WORDT VERVOLGD !

In our articles we regularly refer to an interesting series of texts (in Dutch) about Islam that you can find in this link: Quranic notes by Linda Bogaert of the (now dissolved) CENTER FOR ISLAM IN EUROPE associated with the University of Ghent.

Linda Bogaert has written a wonderful collection of articles. She thinks and writes like a real Muslimah. She doesn’t avoid sensitive topics and manages to portray Islam as the most peaceful and most women-friendly religion. Even as a religion hostile to men (yes, you read that correctly). Starting from commonly accepted principles of human rights, she proves time after time that Islam is in accordance with them.

The fact that this version of Islam is being contradicted by all Islamic scholars, and that so far, it has never existed in any Islamic country, also not at Muhammad’s time, is no obstacle. This non-existing version of Islam is based on a very selective reading of the Qur’an and the Hadith from which Linda “thinks away” large portions. And on a healthy dose of cognitive dissonance by twisting the less pleasant aspects of Islam until she has moulded them into something acceptable, which is only possible by amply contradicting herself, as you will be able to see further on.

Besides, while reading islamic source texts, Linda wishes that certain concepts would be there. But they aren’t. But she actually sees them or imagines they are there. Linda thereby makes use of arguments that are routinely used by Western apologists of Islam.

The original article “are men above women” is written in Dutch can be found in the following link.
