The second Islam
In Medina, Muhammad rises to political leader in a short time. He becomes a warrior and begins a relentless armed struggle as vengeance against the unbelievers of Mecca who had mistreated him and (worst of all) not accepted him as a prophet.
Muhammad lived in Medina for 10 years, until his death. It was 10 years of continuous war. There are hundreds of traditions collected by Bukhari and Muslim that deal with the military expeditions of Muhammad. He himself participated in seventeen of them (Hadith collected by Muslim). The contents of any biography of Muhammad concern mainly his wars during his time in Medina.
The controversial statement of Muhammad, "I have been made victorious with terror" (Bukhari) dates from that time. This statement is one that moderate Muslims try to deny. They cannot imagine it to be true, but the Islamic scholars believe that Muhammad really said this. You can upset a Muslim with this Hadith. You will be considered an Islamophobe.
It should be noted that it all started when Muhammad began to attack the caravans of Meccan traders. Following the first successful robbery with one casualty, verse 2.217 was revealed:

2.217 They ask thee concerning fighting in the Prohibited Month. Say: "Fighting therein is a grave (offence); but graver is it in the sight of Allah to prevent access to the path of Allah, to deny Him, to prevent access to the Sacred Mosque, and drive out its members." Tumult and oppression are worse than slaughter. Nor will they cease fighting you until they turn you back from your faith if they can. And if any of you Turn back from their faith and die in unbelief, their works will bear no fruit in this life and in the Hereafter; they will be companions of the Fire and will abide therein.
This is quite remarkable: "Tumult and oppression are worse than slaughter". Oppression means here “to prevent access to the path of Allah”.
During this period Muhammad married more than ten times. The most surprising marriage was with Aisha when she was six or seven, with "consummation" of the marriage taking place when she was nine and was still playing with dolls. Based on the example of their Prophet, the minimum age of marriage for girls in Iran and certain regions of Afghanistan is 9 years. The second notable marriage took place with Safiya, whom he married immediately after he had had her husband Kinana tortured and beheaded (p 515 Ibn Ishaq).

These people were by no means an immediate threat to Muhammad, but criticising him was enough. A similar phenomenon is taking place in 21st century Europe. Whoever says that Islam a violent religion is threatened with death, devout Muslims thus proving that Islam is indeed a violent religion.
People who wanted to leave the religion were killed under orders from Muhammed. To this day there are countries that prescribe the death penalty for apostasy, and most other Islamic countries implement penalties or sanctions, even moderate Malaysia.
During the period in which Muhammed was in Medina, hundreds of violent verses were revealed. In these verses Allah supported and justified wars.

Ayah 9.5 was the last opportunity for the idolaters. Allah gave them one last chance to become Muslims or else die. The hadith indicates that Muhammad acted upon this.
Christians and Jews had the additional option of paying extortion (the jizya) and to be subordinate to the whims of their Muslim rulers, according to Ayah 9.29.

It is in this "second Islam’’ that women are oppressed, that \men have the right to marry four wives to satisfy their lust, but women are not allowed to choose their own partner. According to verse 4.20 “one wife can be replaced by another” and verse 4.34 allows a man to beat his wife. Muhammad said that women have a defect in intelligence. It is the Islam that sees women as a source of temptation.
It is this Islam which says women prisoners and female slaves may be raped (4.24).
This is the Islam of Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia, Bin Laden and Muhammad Bouyeri, the murderer of Theo van Gogh, and the Muslim terrorists. It is also Islam as understood by Islamic scholars from universities such as Al-
These scholars say that the second Islam is the one that must be applied. They write it in their books. No dusty parchment scrolls but freshly printed books such as ”Reliance of the traveller, a classic manual of islamic sacred law". It was printed in 1994. As described above, it is all there: from chopping off the hand of a thief on page 613, to the killing of apostates on page 595, to the enslavement of women captured during jihad, on page 604
The writers of these books did not themselves invent or interpret anything, it's all in the Quran and the Hadith and supported by the biographies of Muhammad (Ibn Ishaq, Tabari, Ibn Sa'd, Waqidi) and the leading tafsir. These are all works written by devout Muslims with Muslims as audience. These books are printed today in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
It is the real Islam that our moderate Muslim brothers and sisters do not know, or whose existence they refuse to acknowledge.
